What we mean by work that holds, and why it guides everything we make.
STUDIO NOTE / 02
The idea behind the studio.
We care about what happens after launch. A brand strategy, identity system, website, and messaging should keep supporting a firm as the work, the team, and the business grow. We call this standard work that holds.
What does “work that holds” mean?
Work that holds is a set of tools a firm can keep using for years. It supports new project wins, recruiting, and growth into new places without a rebuild.
AEC firms design buildings and systems meant to last decades. Your website, proposals, and presentation decks deserve the same care as the projects you deliver.
Why do so many firm brands stop working?
Most firm brands break down because the business grows and the brand system stays the same. The practice moves forward, and the marketing materials fall behind. For example:
The website undersells the portfolio.
Proposals start from scratch each time.
Interview decks depend on whoever made the last version.
Recruiting materials flatten the culture or fall back on generic industry language.
Ask five team members to describe the firm, and you get five different answers.
Most of these teams care a lot about quality. They lack a system built for the way they work, under tight deadlines.
How do we build work that lasts?
We build brand systems and train your team to run them. A brand keeps working when the people inside the firm can use it day to day without outside help.
In practice, that means we:
write messaging your principals can say out loud in an interview
design templates for the things your team makes most: proposals, decks, case studies, and social posts
set up a website your marketing team can update, with project pages that grow as the portfolio grows
document the rules, so a new hire can pick up the system in their first week
train the team before we hand anything over
The result is a marketing team that can produce consistent, well-designed materials on a tight timeline.
How long should a brand and website built to last stay in use?
A well-built brand system carries a firm through several stages of growth. Across more than 50 AEC firm websites built by our team, the sites stayed in use for more than eight years on average.
We plan for a long life from day one. We shape the site around where the firm will be in five years, along with what it needs today. We build a content structure with room for new practice areas, projects, and people, and we make sure the team can handle routine updates on its own.
A site that lasts also costs less. Every redesign you skip is budget and staff time you can put into the work itself.
What does this mean for your firm?
You get tools you can rely on in the moments that shape reputation, recruiting, and new business, long after launch. And something you’re proud to send.
If your firm’s work has outgrown the way it shows up, we’d like to hear about it. Write to us at hello@boxcrib.com.
